When on Google Earth 21

After searching the entire coast of Cyprus for some reason, I found WOGE 20 in Finland. So, here is number 21 in the "When on Google Earth" series (click for larger view):
Although it is a bit hard to see, there were two long walls (the one on the north still largely intact) stretching from the coast to the citadel above the modern city (left). A more detailed view of the citadel and north wall (click for larger version):
I will post a hint in 24 hours, if no one has figured it out by then.

The Rules of When on Google Earth are as follows:
Q: What is When on Google Earth?
A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!

Q: How do you play it?
A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.

Q: Who wins?
A: The first person to correctly identify the site, including its major period of occupation, wins the game.

Q: What does the winner get?
A: The winner gets bragging rights and the chance to host the next When on Google Earth on his/her own blog!

When on Google Earth 18 Results

Lindsay Allen is our winner of WOGE 18 with the correct answer of Ani, major period of occupation, 9th to 14th centuries CE.

For some images of the site, see:
http://www.panoramio.com/map/#lt=40.5075&ln=43.572778&z=0

Called the "City of Forty Gates" and "City of One Thousand and One Churches," some estimate the city's population at 100,000 to 200,000 at its height. Ani served as the seat of the Armenian Bagratuni dynasty and from the reign of Ashot III (961) reaching its height under Gagik I (989–1020) when the Armenian Catholicos relocated there. In the next few centuries, the city was captured by Byzantines, Seljuk Turks, Georgians and Mongols.

Today a spectacular ruin, its position in Turkish territory and questions about access to ad conservation of the site has made Ani into another political issue in modern Armenia and Turkey's already fraught relationship:

When on Google Earth 18

Hello All. After fighting with Blogger for far too long, here is number 18 in the "When on Google Earth" series (click for larger view):
Hints (18 April 2009):
1) Not in the Americas or China.
2) It is a medieval site.
3) The river and canyon that runs diagonally through the frame marks a modern national boundary.
4) Because of the border, access to the site was restricted by permit until quite recently.
5) The conservation of the site has been a matter of some controversy in the already troubled relationship between the countries on either side of the border.

The Rules of When on Google Earth are as follows:
Q: What is When on Google Earth?
A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!

Q: How do you play it?
A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.
